What supporters say seemed like a good idea ten years ago is now viewed as a “scarlet letter” for undocumented immigrants.

A bill which would abolish the Temporary Visitors’ Drivers License and replace it with something which could be used as a valid identification card awaits the governor’s action.

With the TVDL, “people look at you differently, assume your life story, and don’t fully understand how long the immigration process takes and the various reasons why someone might have a TVDL,” said Priya Vaikuntapathi  of the Indo-American Center in Chicago.

“Immigrants deserve to live without discrimination and the constant fear of being asked for a valid ID.”

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias brought supporters together for a news conference Wednesday; the governor is expected to sign the bill.
