Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – On Wednesday, the City of Springfield announced it has taken action regarding homeless individuals at the corner of North Grand Avenue and Fifth Street. The city cited recent tragic incidents, including loss of life, battery reports, and increased drug activity, as reasons for intervening at the site. Additionally, safety concerns were raised due to tents being placed close to traffic lanes.
According to a social media post from Mayor Misty Buscher’s office, the city’s community outreach coordinator, homeless outreach team, and Memorial Behavioral Health were involved in the effort. Outreach coordinators reportedly connected with individuals, providing referrals, resources, and contact information. Individuals, according to the post, were given the chance to collect their belongings before public works cleared any unclaimed or abandoned property.
