Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Capitol Avenue was filled with veterans, spectators, marching bands and military vehicles during the Veterans Day Parade held Monday to honor those who served and sacrificed in the name of freedom.
Navy veteran Mark Anderson participated and said, ” It makes us feel really good seeing all the little kids out there waving flags at us and thanking us for our service. It brings tears to my eyes every year.”
Terry Lucas served in the Army for 28 years, including the Korean and Gulf Wars, and said serving is something that is very special, and it means a lot to see people coming out for the parade. “It’s such an inspiration to see people of all ages, but especially the younger ones.” Lucas said younger generations should entertain a career in the military, because it can provide training in different jobs and the opportunity to acquire a skill.
Owen Gillespie, a Lanphier High School student, marched in the parade along with other JROTC members and said veterans have been so supportive and helpful as he develops his plan to join the Air Force after graduation to learn about aviation. Fellow JROTC member James Thomas has been a part of the program at Lanphier for about a year. Although not many in his family have served, he is looking forward to joining and acquiring welding skills while serving his country.
“Serving in the military was something very special, and it’s something you take with you all your life,” said Army veteran Mike Fundator of Springfield. The 83-year-old’s advice to the younger generation? “If you get an opportunity to serve, it’s a great feeling that you did something very important for your country.”
The parade was put on by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs along with the Navy Club and the Leathernecks Motorcycle Club.
