A new state law lets businesses offer gender neutral multi-occupancy restrooms. It’s not a mandate, but an option for businesses. Opponents argued back in May that men and women don’t want to share a restroom and worry this could lead to sexual assault.
Representative Kelly Cassidy of Chicago said, “y’all need to get yourselves together and stop being so obsessed with where people pee.” She added, “do your business, clean up if you sprinkle, and flush and wash your hands and get out of there.”
Supporters say the all-gender bathrooms signal inclusivity and will help families taking little ones to the toilet. Under the law, gender neutral bathrooms must have fully enclosed stalls and no urinals.
Representative Dan Ugaste of Geneva expressed concerns back in May that this could lead to sexual assault. “If it’s the only restroom available to someone, we’ve now increased the risk. Because right now, if a man follows a woman, young or old, into a ladies’ room, we know there’s probably an issue there,” said Ugaste.
