Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – District 186 School Board met Monday night with several items on the agenda, some feel-good topics. But Superintendent Jennifer Gill did ask for a moment of silence for the family of Lajarvious Davis, the man who died Saturday night in a hail of gunfire.

Davis’ mother, Eva Knight Smith is an employee in the administrative office. His brother is a security guard for the schools, and his sister is a student. Gill said they started a meal train for the family and had other plans to show support to them.

Three of the district’s high schools will team up this season and next to create a softball co-op. Due to a low number of athletes at those high schools, they will co-opt a team in order to have enough players on the roster to cover any injured players and to keep the season going. Gill said she is optimistic that with the soon-to-be Scheel’s Sports Park and youth programs that all District 186 high schools will be able to field their own teams in the near future.

And a reminder to parents of students, the school district reminds everyone there is a survey you are encouraged to complete on the district’s homepage. The survey is looking for parents to provide feedback on how to create a more welcoming environment. Parents are asked to complete that survey by Friday.
