Springfield, IL (Capitol City Now) A request for an injunction to nullify former Ward 1 Alderman Chuck Redpath’s appointment to the vacant Springfield City Clerk’s seat was filed Wednesday in Sangamon County Court.

Calvin Christian III filed the motion, which alleges the appointment is unlawful and Redpath’s vote for himself to assume the City Clerk’s office is improper influence. The filing goes on to say the appointment shows a disregard for the “ethical standards required of public officials” and violates both the Illinois Public Officer Prohibited Activity Act and the Illinois Municipal Code.

Redpath was appointed to the position at the January 7 City Council meeting after his appointment was approved by a simple majority. However, that measure was not passed without heated discussion by council members about the selection process or lack thereof.

Redpath has said he will only serve out the remainder of the City Clerk’s term and will not run for re-election to the position.

The City Clerk’s Office had already been embroiled in some controversy, when Frank Lesko had won both the City Clerk seat and Sangamon County Recorder. Lesko resigned as City Clerk after he won in a recount of votes requested by former City Clerk Josh Langfelder.
