(CAPITOL CITY NOW)  – The Petersburg community is grieving after a double shooting on Saturday. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon has confirmed the death of 40-year-old Richard Withers of Petersburg, who was transported from his home to Springfield Memorial Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound. He was pronounced clinically deceased on Sunday An autopsy is scheduled, and the death is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

The incident began on Saturday, at approximately 12:30 p.m., when the Menard County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call for a shooting in the 15000 block of Tice Road in rural Menard County. Upon arrival, deputies found two male subjects with gunshot wounds. Both individuals were transported to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

The Menard County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4 to handle the shooting investigation.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the identity and status of the second victim at this time. The PORTA Football Facebook page is encouraging donations to a GoFundMe account in memory of one of their players – Grant Withers.

A fund to support the Withers family has also been established at Petefish, Skiles & Co.
