Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A new app brings “augmented reality” to your visit to the presidential museum in Springfield.

You use the Lincoln Unlocked app by pointing your phone at a designated spot, and it brings up a 3-D image.

“A great example of that is Lincoln’s shaving mirror (pictured), which people can now experience in augmented reality,” Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Christina Shutt said. “We have over thirteen million items in our collection, so we can never put every single thing on display at the same time.”

Shutt said the museum worked with Google and a company called Thoughtworks to bring the stories to life – wherever people are in the world.

“How do we make history accessible to people?” said Shutt. “How do we use tools like augmented reality to add layers? So we’re telling broader and bigger stories, stories that are running in parallel to stories that people already experience at the museum.”

The Lincoln Unlocked app is available in both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
