Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Department of Transportation has begun work to upgrade bridges on Interstate 55 in preparation for a future expansion to three lanes in each direction.

The first phase focuses on improving bridges over the Sangamon River north of Springfield, IDOT announced. The project is funded through the Rebuild Illinois capital program.

Motorists should expect overnight lane closures this week as crews install temporary striping. Concrete barriers will be placed over the weekend, with a permanent work zone in place by Monday. Two lanes in each direction will remain open throughout the construction season, though intermittent closures are expected, IDOT said.

This project marks the first step in a long-term effort to expand I-55 to six lanes through Springfield. However, funding has not yet been secured for the full expansion.

Once completed, the upgraded bridges will continue to carry two lanes over the river until further expansion begins. The next phase, set for 2026, will replace the Bissell Road, Andrew Road, and Sudduth Road overpasses. In 2028, work will begin to widen I-55 to three lanes in each direction from Sherman to the Illinois 54/Sangamon Avenue interchange.
