Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office has released jail video of a man who died after being found unresponsive in his cell Feb. 18. According to a news release from Sheriff Paula Crouch, staff conducted the required 30-minute timed checks on all inmates, including 55-year-old Jeffrey T. Lapping. Upon finding him unresponsive, staff initiated resuscitation efforts, providing CPR and using an AED until emergency medical personnel arrived. Lapping was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Preliminary autopsy findings released by Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon indicated there were no signs of injury or physical trauma. It identifies natural causes as the likely cause, but toxicology reports are still pending.
“The released video confirms that all appropriate actions were taken by correctional staff in accordance with established procedures. Nothing more could have been done to prevent the outcome. We extend our condolences to Mr. Lapping’s family,” stated the release from Crouch.
The incident remains under investigation.
