3/24/25 — Authorities are investigating a vehicle fire on Saturday that led to the discovery of a body.

A passerby first noticed a Kia SUV stopped in the roadway in the 600 block of Horse Farm Road near Glenarm but could not determine if it was occupied, according to Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch. When passing by again around 10:14 a.m., the driver saw smoke coming from the vehicle. Moments later, flames spread rapidly, and the motorist called 911.

Firefighters from the Divernon Fire Department extinguished the fire and found a deceased individual inside. Authorities said the vehicle is registered to an address in Springfield.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s and Coroner’s offices, along with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, are investigating.
