Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A verbal dispute at the Stadium Smokehouse Bar & Grill on North Peoria Road escalated Sunday, ending with a man being shot in the hip. According to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, the 31-year-old victim was involved in an argument inside the bar. After leaving the bar, the suspect—identified as 52-year-old Clarence Smith Jr. of Springfield—allegedly fired multiple shots, striking him one time.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the victim receiving treatment from EMS for the gunshot wound. Injuries were considered non-life threatening, and the victim was in stable condition.

Based on information gathered at the scene, deputies located the suspect at his home in the 2000 block of West Jefferson.  At 5:45 p.m., Smith exited the residence and surrendered to law enforcement.

Smith was arrested for aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. The sheriff’s office reports Smith has prior arrests for drugs, assault and homicide. He remains in the Sangamon County Jail.
