Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Local lawmakers are weighing in on the just passed by the General Assembly’s Fiscal Year 2026 Budget.
Republican lawmakers expressed frustration at being shut out, once again, by super-majority Democrats.
State Senator Sally Turner said in a news release she was especially disheartened by the fact the budget seems to neglect a group most dependent on the state: folks with mental disabilities. She says the 630,000 hours in service cuts means as many as 300 workers could lose their jobs despite an .80 cent per hour wage increase to already short-staffed workers.
She also said she’s thinking about the parents that are already worried about how to pay for school even though this year’s classes just dismissed.
Turner pointed to new corporate income tax increases, new gaming taxes, short-term rental taxes, tobacco taxes, telecommunications taxes, and increased fees.
State Representative, Mike Coffey, says once again the Democratic party has let down Illinois citizens with a budget that offers more taxes and no cuts.
Coffey says the final tally on the budget: $55.2 billion.
State Senator, Steve McClure, said in a news release Pritzker will have grown state spending by nearly 40% since taking office just six years ago.
The senator asked, The cherry on top? Governor Pritzker’s special package: a new $1.50 tax on nearly every delivery to your house.
