Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Gasoline prices in Illinois, and the Springfield area, continue moves downward, according to the most recent reports from GasBuddy.com and AAA.

According to GasBuddy, their average price for a gallon of unleaded in Illinois now sits at $3.31 a gallon, three cents per gallon lower than last week.  AAA, meanwhile, says its statewide average is around $3.35 a gallon, also showing a decline.

Springfield-area prices, according to GasBuddy, range from $2.97 to $3.29, with many stations close to $3.19.  AAA’s Sangamon County average, is at $3.18.

“Average gas prices declined in nearly all states over the last week as refineries ramped up output and gasoline supplies surged,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a news release. “While a few states experienced price cycling—a pattern where prices drop sharply and then spike every couple of weeks—the overall gentle downward trend is typical as summer progresses. If oil prices continue to rise gradually, it could eventually impact gas prices, but for now, we likely won’t see any major shifts at the pump in most areas this week.”

The lowest gas price in the state Sunday was $2.81, according to GasBuddy, while the most expensive was $4.49.

The national gas price average is around $3.07, down 5.2 cents from last month.
