Springfield, IL (WAND) — Thursday, June 19, marks one year since a devastating fire ripped through East Adams Street in Springfield.
The fire on June 19, 2024 destroyed historical buildings lining the 400 block.
Over 70 firefighters worked more than 12 hours in brutal heat. Twelve apartment residents were displaced and multiple businesses were affected— including the Cats’ Pyjamas Cat Cafe, Electric Quill Tattoos, and Cafe Moxo.
The building located at 413/415 Adams Street, which once housed Cafe Moxo, was torn down. The building at 411 was stabilized. The building next door, 417 and its neighbor 421, were knocked down to the first floor.
Over three tons of art and artifacts from the Pillsbury Mills site being stored in the building were destroyed.
The City of Springfield reopened the 400 block of East Adams Street to traffic on April 22.
Cafe Moxo reopened at a new location, 2661 Chatham Road.
