Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – With the roar of a mighty train horn Springfield welcomed the Union Pacific’s No. 1616, The Lincoln Locomotive, to the 3rd St. Amtrak Springfield Station.
It was part of the festivities commemorating the 163rd birthday of the founding of the continent-crossing Union Pacific Railroad. It was created in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln as a means to unite an already divided nation battling through a devastating civil war.
The Union Pacific Railroad selected Springfield as the city where the venerable transportation system celebrated that historic day.
UP officials also presented Mayor Misty Buscher with a special proclamation and signage designating Springfield Illinois as a TRAIN TOWN, USA, in no small part because of its development of the 10th street rail corridor which promises a new dawn for transportation in the area.
Around 300 people were in attendance and heard from dignitaries such as State Senator Doris Turner, Rep. Mike Coffey as well as the mayor. President of the Illinois Rail Association, Tim Butler, served as the MC.
The guest of honor was none other than the 16th president himself who gave a shout out to his friend,
Randy Duncan, a fellow whom Abe says carries the heavy burden of bearing a striking resemblance to the Rail Splitter himself.
