Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Sean Grayson, the now-former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy charged with murder after he shot and killed Sonya Massey more than a year ago, is now back in the custody of the Sangamon County Sheriff.
Grayson had been held in the Macon County Jail for security reasons for most of his incarceration, until he was transferred Wednesday back to Sangamon County, according to Sheriff Paula Crouch.
“The transfer was made to accommodate ongoing medical procedures and follow-up appointments that, due to operational needs of the Sheriff’s Office, require him to be housed in Springfield,” said Crouch, in a news release. “This decision was made after consultation between correctional and medical staff to ensure access to required services while maintaining secure custody.”
Crouch says she expects Grayson to remain at the Sangamon County Jail until his trial, scheduled for October in Peoria, after defense attorneys were granted a change of venue motion.
The sheriff says Grayson will be “housed in a secure unit” of the jail, and that proper precautions have been taken so that the jail can operate otherwise as usual.
According to Sangamon County Circuit Court records, Grayson’s next scheduled court appearance is Friday at 10:30am.
