Alexander, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – No injuries were reported, after a large fire broke out at Sheppard’s Auto Sales and Salvage late Friday morning. The blaze began in machinery used to process used tires into granulated material.

On-site workers attempted to contain the fire, but when efforts failed, emergency services were called. 14 fire departments and multiple Emergency Services from nearby counties arrived on the scene.

Crews used foam suppression and drew water from multiple locations across three counties to battle the flames. The fire covered nearly one-acre, consuming lots of used tires, metal wire, and granulated rubber.

Firefighters worked for more than eight hours to control the fire. Because of the materials involved, you may still see smoke and some flames in the coming days from piles of wire and tires on-site. Fire crews and staff will continue to monitor conditions closely.
