No charges will be filed in the deadly police shooting of an armed juvenile who fired a gun at the Sangamon County Juvenile Detention Center in September.
However, officials said they still are not sure how the juvenile got a hold of a gun in the first place.
On the evening of September 30, 2023, a 17-year-old boy was shot by police after officers said he shot someone and held another person hostage at the Sangamon County Juvenile Detention Center.
When officers arrived, they found the armed suspect at the entrance to the facility.
A Springfield Police officer fired at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital where he later died.
According to our news partners at WAND-TV, Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser released comments on a completed investigation by the Illinois State Police on Tuesday.
The investigation included the interviews of over 50 people and the review of over 2,000 hours of video from the detention center and body cam footage.
“After a review of the completed investigation there is insufficient evidence to file criminal charges against anyone in this case,” Milhiser said. “I concur with this office’s previous determination that the Springfield police officer was justified in the use of deadly force. The juvenile was armed with a handgun and had shown an intent to use the handgun by discharging it, and the officer based on his training and the information he has this time, made the decision to eliminate the threat.”
Milhiser said there is no evidence that the juvenile had an accomplice or was helped in obtaining the gun. However, the investigation did not conclusively determine how the gun got into the detention center.
