Springfield, IL. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – In 1837, the Illinois legislature decided to relocate the capital to Springfield, citing its central location and better accessibility. Construction on the current Illinois State Capitol building was started in 1868, and was designed by Chicago architect John C. Cochran in partnership with Alfred H. Piquenard. The project was completed in 1888.

Over the years, the Illinois State Capitol has been witness to numerous historical events and political debates. It has housed the state legislature, hosted important meetings and ceremonies, and it has been a central hub for civic participation and open public discussions.

Today, the Illinois State Capitol remains the center of government and a landmark in Springfield even as it goes under an estimated $300 million renovation.
