SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – For a new college student, it may be a challenging time finding new places to learn. However, the University of Illinois Springfield has it covered, so it’s not a challenging or scary time for these new students. Kathryn Kleeman, the Director of Admissions at UIS was a guest on the WTAX Morning Newswatch, discussing their upcoming Veteran’s Day open house.

Kleeman explains why the University of Illinois Springfield does a lot of open houses.

“We’re really trying to, you know, show our best self, show them all the different things that we have to offer for students. The nice thing about visiting on an open house is you get to see a lot more things and talk to a lot of different people. You can come on a daily tour and information session, and you get to see the campus, but you really are only talking to us unless you’ve asked for something special. “

Kleeman goes to explain what UIS does at these open houses.

“At an open house, we have all the colleges available for you to interact with, different offices, so like internship office, the career development center, study abroad, financial aid is there for all of your questions, and you can really get one on one with any of those and ask questions that you might have”

Kleeman also explains the reasoning of the open house.

“If you have a senior who’s visiting in the spring and already has their financial aid information, they may have very specific questions about that. Whereas, you know, at this time of year people don’t typically have their financial aid. So, a lot of times they’re looking more for, you know, fit kinds of things. You know, when you visit a college, it’s almost a gut feeling. You can look around and you can be like, ‘Do these people look friendly? Do they look like they could be my friends?’”
