Gov. JB Pritzker probably does not log many miles driving in Springfield. But if he did, it’s likely the closure of Madison and Jefferson Streets between Ninth and Eleventh Streets. That closure began Wednesday as part of the massive rail consolidation project.

“The impact on the quality of life in Springfield will be immediate,” said Illinois Department of Transportation secretary Omer Osman. “By separating train traffic from regular vehicle traffic, the overpass will reduce congestion and delays. There will be better access for bikes and for pedestrians. And safety and mobility will improve, meaning an easier and faster trip, so you can spend more time with your families.”

This part of the project will last fourteen months. The governor and Osman were part of a news conference at Springfield-based Horace Mann.
