Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Just as people must be ready for disasters and emergencies, it’s crucial to have a plan in place for pets as well. June is Pet Preparedness Month, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging pet owners to create an emergency kit and designate someone they trust to collect their pets from their home if they are unable to reach them.

“A pet preparedness kit will keep Fido, Fluffy, Frodo, Furiosa, and any other pets comfortable for at least three days whether you are sheltering in place or evacuating,” said IEMA and Office of Homeland Security Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau. “Less than an hour on your part will mean the world of difference for pets in a disaster.”

Some of the items IEMA recommends for the kit include the following:

  • Non-perishable food and favorite pet treats
  • Water and water bowls
  • Waste bags, cat litter and pan
  • Blanket/bedding and favorite pet toys
  • Leashes, harnesses or carriers
  • Pet medications and a first-aid kit
  • Copies of medical records including vaccination records

IEMA also stresses the importance of having a pet wear identification at all times. Information on how to create a pet preparedness kit is available at ready.illinois.gov.
