Springfield, IL – (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Passion, discipline, courage, communication, adaptability, and resilience. Those are just some of the attributes for success that Linda Shanklin said the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois (BGCCIL) instilled in her son Andre Iguodala. On July 9, Iguodala will be honored for his recent induction into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Hall of Fame. The event will also serve as the dedication for the BGCCIL administrative building at 430 W. Jefferson St.
During the ribbon cutting event, BGCCIL will also celebrate the naming of a long stretch of Jefferson Street as Andre Iguodala Drive in honor of the four-time NBA champion, 2015 NBA MVP and Olympic gold medalist.
“The Boys & Girls Club was the foundation of my son’s upbringing,” said Shanklin. “It all begins at the Boys and Girls Club.”
Iguodala retired from the NBA in 2023 after 19 years in professional basketball including stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets and the Golden State Warriors. He currently serves as the Acting Director of the NBA Players Association.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Iguodala for his invaluable contributions to our Club and for being a tangible example of success and resilience, “said BGCCIL CEO Tiffany Mathis Posey. “Andre continues to be a beacon of hope for so many kids in our community and is living proof that dreams can be realized despite life’s challenges, no matter the starting point.”
Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher will present Iguodala’s family with a Key to the City on his behalf. The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and dedication starts at 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
