Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Those brown “honorary” street signs are supposed to be temporary … but Springfield’s removal of three of them which have to do with Black history will soon be reversed. Ald. Shawn Gregory says signs for Reconciliation Way, Black Lives Matter SPI Way, and Harry H. Marshall Way will return.

“When we put up the sign, it was four years ago,” Gregory said. “We had the tragic murder of George Floyd. We had a very, very peaceful protest. 3000 people were in the streets peacefully in our community. With this ordinance, all three of these signs will stay. Harry Marshall was one of the first – if not the first – Black U.S. marshals in the United States, right here in Springfield.”

Reconciliation Way is part of Eleventh Street. Black Lives Matter SPI Way and Harry H. Marshall Way are parts of Jackson Street.blm

The signs’ removal at the time tensions rise over the police-action fatal shooting of Sonya Massey angered some. The council is to vote Wednesday.
