Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – For generations, menopause symptoms have often been reduced to punchlines in popular culture. But local health experts say the transition is a major physical milestone that requires more comprehensive understanding and care.

To address those needs, dietitian and Culinary Medicine Coordinator Erin Zepp with Memorial Wellness Center joined the WTAX Morning Newswatch to raise awareness about menopause and promote an upcoming free community event titled “Beyond the Scale: Staying Strong Through Menopause. The seminar is designed to shift the focus of women’s health during aging away from weight and toward overall strength and well-being.

“So often, weight is the thing that women will seek help for,” said Zepp. “But it’s so much more than that.”

The event is part of the center’s ongoing “Beyond the Scale” series and will feature two regional medical experts specializing in menopause care.

Mary Hitt, a nurse practitioner with Southern Illinois University, will lead a discussion on hormone replacement therapy, including modern updates, common misconceptions, and who may benefit from treatment.

Megan Jaras, a women’s health physical therapist with Memorial Rehab, will follow with a presentation on how the transition from perimenopause to menopause affects the musculoskeletal system.

“Menopause is one of those times where women lose strength, and we want to do everything we can to stop that,” Zepp said, noting that maintaining strength is key to long-term health.

While nutrition cannot prevent menopause, Zepp said it plays an important role in managing symptoms, supporting bone health, improving sleep, and maintaining energy. Healthy snacks prepared by Zepp will also be offered at the event.

Organizers say the seminar is intended not only for women experiencing menopause, but also for partners and family members seeking a better understanding of the transition.

“Menopause doesn’t have to be a punchline,” Zepp said. “It’s a real physical change that, if we live long enough, all women will experience.”

The free event will be held Wednesday, June 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Wellness Center, 320 E. Carpenter St.
