Decatur, IL (WAND) – Just days away from Memorial Day, AAA is saying they expect 2.1 million Illinoisans to travel for Memorial Day weekend. With an increase of vehicles on the road, its important to stay alert.

Mark Jenkins with AAA suggests planning ahead and leaving early to avoid traffic. “The worst times out on the roadway is likely going to be in the afternoon and early evening hours, because that’s when you’re going to have that combination of travelers and afternoon and evening commuters who are returning home from work.” Jenkins said.

Staying aware on the road is vital. AAA responded to 356,000 road assistance calls last Memorial Day weekend. Its important to slow down and move over when you see flashing lights on the road.

AAA expects gas prices to remain lower than last year, most of the summer.
