Proponents of a bill – now on its way to the governor – to ban lies and deception at crisis pregnancy centers – say those facilities sometimes use misinformation or scare tactics to steer expectant mothers away from abortion.

And a lengthy debate before the bill passed Wednesday probably changed no minds.

“To hear my colleagues from the party of government small enough to fit in my uterus,” said State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago), “defend lies and deception is ridiculous.”

Cassidy has said numerous times she ended an ectopic pregnancy to save her own life.

With supporters arguing that the full spectrum of reproductive health – including abortion – is necessary to protect women, State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) wondered how far this can go.

“Should we protect young women in high school restrooms from intact males in that same space?” he asked. “Should we protect women in collegiate athletics from intact males in their dressing room?”

SB 1909 awaits the governor’s action.
