Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Springfield man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a body on Interstate 55 in Springfield in 2024.

According to Illinois State Police, Robert Lee, Jr., 57, was arrested Wednesday with the help of U.S. Marshals.  He is being charged with three counts of First Degree Murder, and one count of Concealment of a Homicidal Death.  Lee is being held in the Sangamon County Jail pending a detention hearing.

ISP says they were notified March 12, 2024 by the Illinois Department of Transportation that human remains were found on I-55 southbound near the Stevenson Drive ramp.  Those remains were later identified as Teresa Coleman, 54, and preliminary autopsy results confirmed her death was a homicide.

“After a lengthy and thorough investigation, ISP special agents identified Robert Lee as the suspect,” said an ISP news release.  An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday, leading to Lee’s arrest through special agents and members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Illinois State Police says its troopers are still investigating the death.  They ask anyone with information to call Sangamon and Menard County Crime Stoppers anonymously at 217-788-8427, report online, or use the P3 app.  An award of $5,000 is available for any information the leads to a conviction.
